Identity of Patchouli Essential Oil from Madagascar
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), a plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family, originates from Southeast Asia. In Madagascar, it has perfectly adapted to the humid regions of the northeast, particularly around Antalaha and the SAVA region, where it grows in agroforestry systems alongside vanilla and other essential oil crops.
The essential oil is obtained through gentle steam distillation of dried leaves. On average, 125 kilograms of leaves are required to produce one litre of essential oil.
Distillation takes place in our own integrated distillery in Antalaha, located in close proximity to the plantations, ensuring full traceability and preservation of the oil’s authentic olfactory profile.
Our Expertise
Jacarandas works with over 100 producers across eight villages in the Antalaha region.
Most of these farmers, originally part of vanilla cooperatives, diversify their income through patchouli cultivation.
Our teams provide comprehensive technical support, from planting to distillation:
-
Training in good agricultural and post-harvest practices,
-
Supply of inputs and regular monitoring of plantations,
-
Certification and strict quality control of each batch,
-
Implementation of a sustainable pricing model based on the cost of a decent living for both producers and employees.

Our Distillery
Inaugurated in 2022, the distillery embodies our sustainable production model. Powered by solar energy and biomass from distillation residues, it operates in a closed-loop system, reducing water consumption by more than 40%.
Built from bamboo and locally sourced materials, it supports regional craftsmanship while limiting deforestation. Effluents are treated through phytopurification, and organic waste is reused as compost.
Through carefully controlled processes and rigorous batch monitoring, we ensure consistent quality, full traceability, and minimal environmental impact.
Worldwide
Patchouli essential oil is widely used in:
-
Perfumery, as an essential fixative in oriental and chypre compositions,
-
Natural cosmetics, for its balancing and regenerating properties,
-
Aromatherapy, for its grounding and calming effects.
Today, Indonesia supplies over 80% of the global demand, yet Malagasy patchouli oils stand out for their traceability, purity, and sustainability.
European and American markets are increasingly seeking ethical and certified sources, aligned with new regulations such as the CSRD and CSDD.
